Up until the forming of the Continental Army, many blacks fought alongside white patriots. Once the Army was formed it became frowned upon to include blacks within their ranks. Hearing this the Earl of Dunmore wrote a proclamation offering American Indentured Servants and Black Slaves their freedom if they will fight for King George III.
